Doncaster Dolphins Make Waves at State Championships!

At the recent Masters swimming State “Short Course” Championships, the Doncaster Dolphins had the highest score for both the Men’s and Women’s Points competition – a great achievement.

“Short Course” racing takes place in a 25m pool, similar to our indoor pool at Aquarena. The competition is intense, with the fastest swimmers covering 25 meters so quick, they barely have time to get wet—lots of splash!

However, Masters Swimming isn’t just for speedsters; it’s for adults aged 18 and up, with our oldest swimmer at 94. The sport welcomes participants of varying abilities. Races include both male and female swimmers, with heats organized by skill level. There’s no “winner” of the heat; final race results are determined later by officials.

Masters’ swimmers compete in 5-year age bands (example: 30-35, 55-59) and are separated into Male and Female categories. In relay races, the ages of the four swimmers are combined, and the age bands are extended into 40-year groupings (example: 240-279), with Male, Female, and Mixed categories.

What did the Dolphins achieve besides winning both the Male and Female points competitions?

  • 3 individual State records
  • 2 State Relay records
  • 33 individual Club records
  • 6 Club Relay records
  • 56 First Places
  • 38 Second Places
  • 19 Third Places

Many swimmers achieved Personal Best times, and all 25 participants had a fantastic day. Notably, a 76-year-old swimmer competed in his first-ever competition and loved it!

Our Doncaster Dolphins Masters Swimming Club trains at Aquarena in the heated outdoor pool on Monday and Thursday evenings (6.30pm to 7.45pm) and Saturday mornings (8.30am to 10.00am). New swimmers aged 18 and up are welcome to join, meet the coaches, and enjoy 3 FREE TRIAL sessions with the squad. It’s never too late to start swimming!
