During the lessons:
Children under the age of 3 years must be accompanied by a parent in their lesson.
If your child hasn’t swam before, then we recommend that a parent brings bathers so they can go in the class with the student for the first two weeks of lessons (this will be necessary if the student is fearful during their first couple lessons).
Outside of the lessons:
Children under the age of 5 years must be accompanied by a parent in the water when they attend for a casual swim outside their lessons.

Under 10 – must be accompanied and constantly supervised.
If you or your child are sick and cannot attend their scheduled lesson, you can record their absence online or by calling our team. Absences must be recorded at least 2 hours prior to the lesson start time.

During lesson times there is a supervisor on pool deck who supports the Swim Teachers, assesses classes and provides progress feedback to parents of students – these are our Swim Captains.
Swim Captains wear pink vests on pool deck so they are visible and can be easily identified.
Our instructors hold accredited Swimming & Water Safety Teaching certificates, current CPR certification, and working with children’s clearances. All infant lesson teachers have specialised additional qualifications.
Swim Captains follow an assessment schedule to ensure each class is assessed every 6 to 8 weeks. During the assessment the Swim Captain will complete a progress report for each student and determine if they are ready to advance to the next level.
If a student has not been assessed for over 8 weeks, they may have missed the lesson when their class was last assessed. If this is the case, we encourage you to please let the Swim Captain know that it has been over 8 weeks since their last assessment, and this way the Swim Captain can check when their class is scheduled to be assessed next – and if time permits, they may be able to assess the class that day.
Progress reports include details on what Swim and Survive skills need to be achieved for students to be promoted to the next level. The Swim Captains will provide the progress reports and feedback to students and/or parents – so if your student is being assessed please see the Swim Captain after your class to collect the progress report.
Please note: The progress reports are not certificates and cannot be used to move up a level.
Everyone learns at a different pace, so the time it takes will differ for every person.
To progress as quickly as possible, we recommend the following:
- Consistently attend swimming lessons weekly
- Avoid taking extended breaks from lessons (as students often regress)
- Visit the pool outside of lesson times to practice the skills learnt in lessons
- Make the most of additional swimming programs, including school swimming programs, and holiday intensive programs (HASP)
Enrol children into lessons at an early age (under 3 years old) so they are familiar with water and won’t need to overcome a fear of water at a later age.
Aquarena is home to the Doncaster Templestowe Swimming Club (DTSC) who offer competitive and fitness squad options.
